Lee Ohliger - Player of Year Coordinator
Final Standings for Player of the Year 01/05/03 - 11/13/03

We had a very exciting finish to this year's Player of the Year races.
All five categories were decided in the last weekend and the following
day when the Reitman final was held. In the novice category, Alice
Giannella almost overtook Helen Lee, who held on for the narrowest
margin of victory in the five races. In the intermediate category,
James Sundstrom pulled ahead of Jennifer Broekman by performing well in
the Flight A (repeat, Flight A) Swiss Teams. Jonathan Ohliger, despite
being away at college and unable to participate in the Reitman, the last
unitwide or the last sectional, had built up a lead just large enough to
hang on to win his category over a hard-charging Penny Paikin who threatened
both Jonathan's and his father's positions in their respective categories.
In the under-1000 category, Lee Ohliger had to place first in two events
at the sectional to overcome the lead that John Wass obtained when he
placed first in the Sunday B/C/D Swiss in September. The winner in the
over-1000 category, and also the overall Player of the Year, is Tod
Thorgersen. His team placed second in the Reitman, losing by only two
imps to the powerful Berkowitz/Pollack/Cohen squad. In addition, he
came in first in the Friday evening pair game at Allendale. Well done,
one and all. A new Player of the Year contest begins with our Annual Dinner
on December 7, 2003. Invitations are in the latest newsletter. You need to
send in your reservations by November 15, so please hurry. I look forward
to seeing you there.
