Club changes
Have you heard? Below are some happenings here and there about the Unit.
Changes in Wyckoff . There has been a change of the Bridge Center in Wyckoff; an easy transition of ownership from Linda Conroy to Jo Ann Van Delft-just a ripple in the current of Duplicate Bridge at a club that has been in existence for over 25 years. Jo Ann hasn't changed a thing but has tried to make the games even more sociable and welcoming. The playing fee hasn't changed; there is a promise of a partner if a player calls Jo Ann in advance; and there is a large variety at the food table, with fresh fruit, assorted cheeses, tuna salad, meats and snacks. The Club maintains a strict policy of camaraderie and good fellowship at all times and the games are always stratified so that inexperienced players can feel comfortable and mingle with experienced players. On Mondays at noon there is a lesson for those who are interested in improving their game. It's so easy to go with the flow, why not come on over and join the fun.
Another change in the unit is at the Sparta Club. Marge Curvin is now in charge of the Monday game. Bob Wengert has taken over the Thursday Game. Check your Club Directory for time and phone numbers. Social times in the unit continue to occur. Jim and Linda Conroy prepared a wonderful corn beef and cabbage dinner for the St. Pat's celebration at the Wyckoff Club. This is an annual event and continued this year under the Conroy's direction. The members of the club will miss the Conroy's when they leave Ramsey this spring to move to their residences at the Jersey Shore and Florida.
Maywood will continue their dinners on Saturday night April 1st. Caryll and Harris Schenker prepare the food . As many of us know, Caryll is a wonderful cook. You should make reservations early in the week if you plan to have dinner before the game. Check the club for details.
The Rockland Club has a Saturday night potluck dinner one Saturday night a month. If you want to attend, call the club to check the time and date. Members continue to advance to higher level. The past bulletins noted that Marvin Brown had become a Bronze Master, Ann Shor has reached 500 points, and George Wang became a Silver Life Master. The Wednesday morning Newplicate game for players relatively new to duplicate play will resume on Wednesday, April 5th at the Rockland Bridge Center from 9:15 to 11:30. In addition, the Thursday morning Newplicate game that began last June will continue each week. The participants also receive a mini-lesson starting at 9 AM from one of the game's directors, Renee Blank or Stan Fink. The directors are also on hand to assist the Newplicate players with any bridge-related questions.
Bergen Bridge has started a "Beat the House" game on Thursday @ 12:30. The house pair is picked randomly and whatever pair beats them gets a free entry for the next Thursday. Ties do not win.
Please let your editor know if you have any news for this column or if I have missed any special achievements that have occurred by any of our unit members

EASYBRIDGE! Update Jean Mazouat
EASYBRIDGE! 2 at the Maywood club was off to a good start on Friday night, March 3rd. Twenty people came and played a 15 board game, some for the first time. There were many more who called and expect to be there in the coming weeks.
This program is a wonderful place for rubber bridge players to try duplicate without the stresses of the average club game. It is also a place for those who are taking lessons to continue learning, meet nice people and - our first priority - have fun.
A note to TEACHERS - if your students are looking for new partners to play with or just want to practice more, I will give them their first night free just to come down and look us over.
Call Jean Mazouat at 201-891-3428 if you have any questions.

Defensive Shortcoming Stan Fink
When Jimmy Durante used to say, "I've got a million of 'em," he was referring to his seemingly endless supply of humorous material. Actually, the same expression could be employed to describe my defensive shortcomings at the bridge table.
For example, notice how charitable I was while sitting west during the following hand.

Normally, I don't like to lead from AJX, but since my partner, Phyllis Profita, had announced with her opening preempt that she had a seven-card suit, I didn't feel that I was giving anything away as I played the Ace. I continued with the Jack of diamonds and declarer ruffed in dummy with the Ace. Next, he led the Queen of spades as partner followed with her singleton nine. Declarer then switched to clubs, winning in his hand with the King. When he led a club toward dummy's Ace, I was afraid that he might have started with a doubleton so I ruffed. Declarer played a low club from dummy and my partner dropped the Jack. I switched to the Jack of hearts and declarer won with dummy's Ace.
Next, he led the Ace of clubs, partner played her Queen and I ruffed again. I felt fortunate to have won two tricks with a suit headed by the Eight. However, three tricks later, declarer placed his cards on the table and claimed. After I led a low heart to dummy's King and partner followed with the Queen, declarer pulled two rounds of trump and discarded his heart loser on his established fifth club.
"Why did you trump the clubs?" partner asked. "My Queen would have been a good trick."
"If you won your club then I wouldn't have won my spade tricks," I said. "My"

In Memory of Leon Cohen Friends of Leon
A man who built friendships across bridge tables everywhere he played died on January 8. He was Leon Cohen, stalwart at the Rockland Bridge Center in Spring Valley and among the strongest supporters of our unit.
Leon had been active in the bridge world years ago and after a long hiatus, returned as an active player in 1991. At the Rockland Bridge Center, Leon enjoyed partnering with newcomers as well as veterans. His friendliness, his helpfulness, his care and concern for others always made his partners feel comfortable and at ease at the bridge table.
It was at the bridge center that Leon met Natalie Wiko, who became Mrs. Leon Cohen. Their partnership brightened many games at the bridge club, and at regional and national tournaments.
Certainly, the bridge players who were fortunate enough to know Leon will long remember his ready wit, his cheerful smile, his tales of success at the blackjack tables in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, his love of bridge and, most of all, his genuine friendliness.
All will miss him.

THIS 'N THAT FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTOR
Just back from the Spring NABC in Cincinnati and the Board Meetings. As always I had a good time, the Host group did a good job providing food and entertainment, tours and information. The hotels were not as nice as usual, and the convention center was so vast that other People besides me were getting lost every day. However, everything can't always be perfect. Attendance was not quite as good as six years ago, but it was well over 10,000 tables.
For those seniors who are interested in travel, there will be a Senior Team Trials in Las Vegas starting on June 20th. The winners will earn the right to represent the United States in a Senior Competition to be held in Maastricht at the end of August at the site of the World Bridge Championships. Sounds like great fun!
A great deal of time was spent at the meetings discussing finances. In spite of the raise in dues, entry fees and bridge products, the ACBL lost $400,000 in '99. Much of it was due to unbudgeted programs that the Board authorized and the remainder was due to salary increases with current employees and new hirers. In an effort to halt the financial losses, the Board has asked Management to try to reduce expenses and the Board of Directors has made an effort to cut its expenses as well.
An extensive Marketing Program is being planned and the hiring of a Marketing Director. It is expected that a plan will be presented to our Board at the summer meetings in Anaheim to increase membership. To date, we are still losing more members than we gain each month, although the help that we are getting from all the units is obviously doing some good.
The Board authorized Management to enter into an agreement with an On-Line Bridge Service and to run On-Line Bridge Games. We believe that it is important for the ACBL to have a presence on the Internet and if we run the games, we will be better able to control the situation. On-Line Bridge will never replace face-to-face bridge at the clubs. However, we feel that it is one of our resources for attracting new players to our game, and in due time, to our clubs, our sectionals and regionals.
We have authorized a new event. It is a State, Province, Country or Territory Championship. It may be run as a pair or team event and in our case, we would be able to have two, one with other units and districts who are in New York State, and one with units and districts in New Jersey. It has some similarity to the NAOP's and the GNT's in that you have to live in the state where you play but this is being done in an effort to gain some Publicity. Newspapers love State Champions.
For those of you that attend NABC's the starting times have been changed to 7:30 pm for the evening sessions. The 1:00 pm afternoon start is remaining the same. This gives everyone a half hour less time for dinner but accommodates those that like to be finished early.
We hope that many of you will decide to play in the Grand National Team event this year. No qualification required for any flight. Just bring your team and enter on April 15th at the Hungarian Club in Woodbridge. Qualifiers will be playing in Glen Rock on Sunday. So get your team together, read the details elsewhere in this Newsletter and try to earn the right to represent District 3 at the National Finals this summer in Anaheim.
Another great opportunity for bridge almost in your backyard is on Memorial Weekend. District 3 is co-hosting the Eastern with New York and the tournament will be held at the Sheraton in Parsippany. Plan to spend your holiday weekend with us. Good food, good fun, good bridge! I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Article Submission Appreciation Betty Price
A note to thank the writers of bridge articles. Although we were limited with space this time, there is now a back log of articles for selection. Please continue to send your articles. I will make an effort to rotate the writers. Perhaps in July there will be more space to include more of the writings, as this time much data was printed.
Any data for the July 1 bulletin needs to be sent to me by June 1. This allows time for the materials to be entered and processed for the July publication.
Thanks,
Betty Price

PRESIDENT'S LETTER Glenda Calkins
We welcome two new board members - Rosalind Abel and Kay Roelke -who were elected at the January Board meeting. Ros is filling the vacancy created by the death of Richard Lighton, and Kay is filling the vacancy created by the resignation of her husband, Wayne. Wayne had just been re-elected in December; however, his professional commitments would not allow him to continue. We would like to thank him for his hard work in editing the newsletter during the years he was on the Board.
Spring is here and with it come many opportunities to play bridge at all levels at convenient locations. In addition to the full calendar of events at the club level, we have a Sectional coming up April 28-30 at Guardian Angel in Allendale, and a Regional which is being jointly hosted by our District 3 and New York's District 24 in Parsippany May 24-29. Please watch for the particulars on both these events.
At the April Sectional in Allendale we will again have a playthrough on Sunday. In spite of the shortage of food, feedback on the playthrough in February was very positive, some of it coming from those who were skeptics before the fact. So we will give it another try - this time with a great deal more food; however, we continue to see this format as experimental and your comments are welcome.
One of my highest priorities as President is encouraging new players, and I am pleased that the April tournament will see a new event - EASYBRIDGE! - under the supervision of Jean Mazouat. Please check the ad in this newsletter for particulars.

Knockout events are gaining in popularity as evidenced by the variety of them in all the National and Regional tournaments throughout the year. Therefore, the local and unit knockouts provide a wonderful opportunity for players to play more frequently in this type of event. Back to newsletter index
