President's Letter - Glenda Calkins

After three challenging and gratifying years, I will step down as Unit 103 President as of January 5. In looking back, I find much to be pleased about. The two priorities I set at the outset were 1) to encourage new players, and 2) to enhance our use of technology.

Regarding the encouragement of new players, our Novice Program has certainly taken off. Starting with Jean Mazouat, continuing with Al Delio, and now with Amy Nellissen, the Saturday morning program at Guardian Angel during our Sectionals, has grown by leaps and bounds. In November there were 23 ½ tables. I feel that the future of this game we love is in developing new players.

Regarding the use of technology, our web page has been improved, with results from our events now available shortly after they are complete. The sanctioning of our events is now done electronically, as is virtually all of our communications with ACBL. The newsletter is produced on a special word-processing program. Although I am sure there is more we can and should be doing, I am pleased with our progress on several fronts. My thanks to Arnie Bergen for the many hours he put into keeping the web page up-to-date and helping others understand all that must take place if it is to stay current.

I would like to thank all the Board members for their hard work, and I hope that you will thank them when you see them, especially the retiring members, Arnie Bergen, Andy Muenz, and Helen Wallach. We have also had a very faithful group of volunteers who are not Board members who have been invaluable, especially in making the Sectionals run smoothly.

Thank all of you for your faith in me and for the support you have shown me during my tenure. I will still be around and love hearing from you, whether in person, by telephone or e-mail.

Glenda
